Cosplay Does Not Mean Consent: Promoting Respect and Kindness at Celestial Events

In the world of fantasy, creativity, and celebration, cosplay is a vibrant form of self-expression. At Celestial Events, we’re privileged to host gatherings where guests showcase stunning costumes that bring their favourite characters to life. While these outfits often inspire admiration and excitement, it’s crucial to remember one essential truth: cosplay does not mean consent.

What Does "Cosplay Does Not Mean Consent" Mean?

This phrase emphasises that wearing a costume does not grant others the right to invade someone’s personal space, take photos without permission, or engage in any behaviour that makes the cosplayer uncomfortable. A person’s choice to participate in cosplay is a celebration of creativity—not an open invitation for unsolicited interactions.

Why Is This Message Important?

Cosplay communities thrive on inclusivity, passion, and mutual respect. However, misunderstandings about boundaries can sometimes occur, leading to situations where individuals feel uncomfortable or unsafe. By raising awareness of the importance of consent, we can ensure that every cosplayer—whether they’re a seasoned professional or a first-time attendee—feels supported and respected.

At Celestial Events, we go above and beyond to try and always create a safe, inclusive environment where:

  • Everyone feels safe: Whether you’re dressed as a beloved character or attending as yourself, you deserve to enjoy the event without fear of harassment.

  • Creativity is celebrated: Admiring someone’s costume is fantastic, but respect their boundaries when engaging with them.

  • Consent is key: Always ask before taking photos, initiating a conversation, or touching someone’s costume, prop, or personal space.

How Celestial Events Ensures Safety and Support

At Celestial Events, we have always been committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees. To achieve this, we go above and beyond standard requirements by providing the following at our gala ball events:

  1. Increased Security Presence: We provide more security guards than required by event regulations to ensure everyone feels safe and supported, and has someone to go to if needed.

  2. Visible Volunteers: Our volunteers in high-visibility vests and are stationed throughout the venue to assist cosplayers, guests, or attendees who need help or a break.

  3. Dedicated Medical Staff: We have two full-time medical staff onsite at all times to handle any emergencies or provide care as needed.

  4. Quiet Space: For anyone feeling overwhelmed, we offer a dedicated quiet space with our medical team where they can take time to recharge.

  5. Neurodivergent-Friendly Stress Packs: To support our neurodivergent attendees and/or cosplayers, we provide stress packs to use in our quiet zone designed to help feel comfortable and at ease.

How to Respect Boundaries at Celestial Events - TIPS!

  1. Always Ask Permission: If you’d like to take a photo with or of a cosplayer, simply ask. A quick, polite request shows respect and creates a positive interaction.

  2. Be Mindful of Their Comfort: Cosplayers may need breaks, be in a hurry, or simply prefer not to engage at that exact moment. Respect their “no” without pushing.

  3. Treat Everyone Equally: Whether someone is in an elaborate costume or casual attire, an official cosplayer or an attendee - mutual respect applies to everyone.

  4. Use Event Resources: If you or someone else needs assistance, always feel empowered to reach out to our security team, volunteers, or medical staff immediately. They are always ready to help and there for you.

Building a Culture of Mutual Respect

Celestial Events exists to celebrate the beauty of storytelling, creativity, and community. For these celebrations to thrive, mutual respect is non-negotiable. By practising kindness, patience, and understanding, we can create a space where everyone—cosplayers and guests alike—feels valued and included.

When we respect boundaries, we encourage others to embrace their passions with confidence. And when we celebrate one another, we build a community where everyone feels empowered to express themselves freely.

Our Commitment

At Celestial Events as we grow and increase events and attendees, we continue to care about every person in the room. Through campaigns like “Cosplay Does Not Mean Consent,” we aim to create more awareness for the entire industry and make sure that our events are the leaders, with additions like the added support of extra security, visible volunteers, medical staff, quiet spaces, and neurodivergent-friendly resources. We’re always working to ensure our events remain safe, are inclusive, and enjoyable for all. Always feel confident to speak up, Celestial Events and this community are all here to support each other - always!

Let’s always be the leaders in celebrating creativity, respecting boundaries, and making every moment at Celestial Events unforgettable. ✨
